The high decibel in the Copenhagen may have ended but the basic four countries viz. India, China, South Africa and Brazil continues their spark to step together to meet in January for a firm stand on the Climate change.
To be on the same page and be prepared to put forward their common goal in Black and White, the Basic Four has decided to do so well before the bigger Emitters come and knock their doors individually. China has written to India for an early round of the BASIC countries. Members of Basic Four have apprehended that the rounds of discussions on the climate change is going to be more challenging and problematic than even the Copenhagen round.
The meeting is definitely bound to discuss the strategies to deal with other non-UN but important meetings like that of the G20 and the US-hosted Major Economies Forum that have major political implications on the formal negotiations.
Even though India was one of the key contries to negotiate the accord, it would be internally assessing the implications of formally standing by it under the UN process. It still remains open if the government would decide to take the accord to the cabinet for clearance before it formally accepts it. Sources indicated the next month would see frenetic discussions to resolve the new questions the Copenhagen Accord has raised.
The hopes are that the meeting of the BASIC four will also help cement a common position and a common goal on the accord and the procedural and larger implications of accepting it. The consultations at different levels would also be required with other G77 developing countries, many of whom have already expressed reservations about letting the accord become the template for future negotiations.
